What the registration means

Licensed contractor, NJ style: what registration means.

Under New Jersey's Contractors' Registration Act, businesses that perform home improvement work on residential properties must register with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. Registered contractors receive a Home Improvement Contractor number, which must appear on their contracts, estimates and advertising. Ours is HIC #13VH09293400.

Registration also requires a contractor to carry commercial general liability insurance. That protects you if something goes wrong on the job, such as accidental damage to your home.

Your rights as a homeowner.

New Jersey law gives homeowners a few important protections on home improvement projects:

  • Home improvement contracts over $500 must be in writing and signed by both you and the contractor.
  • The contract should describe the work, the materials, the total price and the start and completion dates.
  • You generally have three business days after signing to cancel the contract.
  • Changes to the agreed work should be made in writing.
